Für das "strictly inc." Projekt hat sich Banks mit einem ehemals erfogreichen Musiker Jack Hues zusammengetan, bekannt aus der Pop-Band Wang Chung, einer der unzähligen Bands, die sich als relativ kurzlebig erwiesen. Eigentlich ist "strictly" markttechnisch gesehen gar keine Soloplatte von Tony Banks, scheinbar wollte der als Solokünstler notorisch erfolglose Musiker unter einem anderen Namen die Charts stürmen. Warum ihm dieses auch als "strictly inc." nicht gelang, ist rein musikalisch kaum zu erklären. Faktisch handelt es sich jedoch bei "strictly inc." um noch eine Soloplatte vom ex-Genesis Keyboarder, nachdem der Musiker hier alles selbst komponiert hat.

Auf den ersten 3 Tracks will man offenbar so poppig-angepaßt wie nur möglich wirken, gleichzeitig gelang es Banks, keine Peinlichkeiten abzuliefern. Das gleiche gilt auch für das überflüssige "Charity balls", das jedoch der millionenscheffelnden Eintagsfliegenpopkonkurrenz, die Banks ständig herauszufordern sucht, im nichts nachsteht.

Der vierte Song "The Serpent said" würde auf jeder Genesis-Platte nach "The Lamb" auch seinen würdigen Platz finden, mit echten Drums, melodisch überzeugend und mit Banks-typischen Läufen im Mittelteil. Darauf folgt "Never let me know", eine gelungene Ballade, hier würde ich neben dem Gesangsthema die geschmacksvollen Istrumentalpassagen hervorheben wollen.

"Something to live for" erinnert an die poppige Ausgabe von Genesis und mit "A piece of you" ist dem Keyboarder wieder eine nette Ballade gelungen. Würde die nur jemand in den meinungsbildenden Medien bemerkt haben, hätten wir 1995 glatt einen Hit von Tony Banks gehabt.

"Strictly Incognito" ist ein Up-tempo-Song mit einer Gesangsmelodie, die sehr ansprechend wirkt; nicht übel. Die Platte schließt eine längere proggig-angehauchte Nummer, die aus mehreren Teilen besteht. Nach zwei unterschiedlichen, getragenen Gesangsthemen mündet die Spannung in einer lebhaften instrumentalen Keys-Passage, die dann kurz einem ruhigen Teil weicht. Darauf folgt noch nach besten Regeln der Progkunst ein abschließendes, aufsteigendes Gesangsthema, das Stück endet mit pathethischem Teil für Gitarre und Keys; der danach kommende federleichte Ausgang ist wirklich charakteristisch für diesen Komponisten und zurecht seit Anfang der 70er von Fans geschätzt. Textlich hätte man die Scheibe wohl auch nicht proggiger abschließen können:

On an island in the darkness
Nothing is familiar
Tell me are you frightened on your own
Do you have the will to carry on?

Wirklich, eine wundersame Art, eine Pop-Platte zu beenden. "An island in the darkness" bleibt wohl das Beste, was man von Banks nach 1980 gehört hat.

Fazit: Mit dem Projekt "strictly inc." scheint Banks gelungen zu sein, einige ansprechende, melodisch gelungene Popsongs für die Nachwelt festzuhalten. Die never-to-become-Hits von "strictly inc". wirken unverkrampfter als ähnliche Versuche von "Fugitive", weniger anbiederisch als auf "Bankstatement" und kompakter als die Songs auf "Still", den erfolgreichen Songs von Mike and the Mechanics und Genesis der 80er ebenbürtig.

"Strictly Inc" ist wohl das beste TB-"Pop"-Album. Kein einziger wirklich banaler Popsong, der einem die Betätigung der Skip-Taste abnötigt. Die Platte ist abwechslungsreich, gut produziert und hat endlich mal einen richtig guten Sänger.

Ich möchte einige Stücke besonders hervorheben. "Walls of Sound" ist eine wunderschöne Ballade, wie auch Tony meint: "It's just a love song, but in some ways it's my favourite track on the album". Es gibt übrigens auch einen "Single Remix", der mit etwas mehr Percussions angereichert ist und somit etwas "lebhafter" wirkt. Eine interessante Alternative.

"Never Let Me Know" ist einer der musikalisch am interessanten Songs. Insbesondere der instrumentale Mittelteil rockt. Bemerkenswert auch hier der tiefsinnige, ziemlich traurige Text.

Zu "An Island In The Darkness" verweise ich auf die obige Rezi. Viel mehr gibt es dazu nicht zu sagen. Definitiv ein Höhepunkt der Banks-Solo-Diskographie.

Alles in allem ein Album, dem jeden Genesis-Fan eine Chance geben sollte.

Abschließend möchte ich noch Mr. Banks selbst zu Wort kommen lassen. Hier seine Kommentare zu den einzelnen Songs.

DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON ME "Don't Turn Your Back On Me is, perhaps, the most straightforward song on the album, and uses a heavy reggae rhythm that I've always liked. It's also a chance for Jack to be at his most eccentric - he does things with his voice that I find very interesting. It wasn't originally the opening track, but I think it's got single potential. But who am I to say? Look at some of our choices for singles in the early days of Genesis!"

WALLS OF SOUND "Crowded House are a group that I like, and they had a song on their last album that had a fast rhythm running through what was essentially a ballad. I tried to get a little of that feel on Walls Of Sound. Musically, it links chord sequences in a way that ends up with you being out of key. Like those old-fashioned songs that used to go up a tone each verse... this sort of does it without actually doing it. It's just a love song, but in some ways it's my favourite track on the album."

ONLY SEVENTEEN "Only Seventeen emerged out of stuff we were doing for the last Genesis album, but we couldn't find a home for it. It was originally called Dot Echo - a rhythm idea on the SD1 with the echo coming on the dot position in the bar and giving it a lot of edge. I did a 20-minute improvisation and then took elements out of it and made a song. Then we brought it here and added the drums. I think it's really good."

THE SERPENT SAID "I've always liked slow tracks such as Lion Of Symmetry or The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging, which was one of my favourites off The Lamb..., but it was underdeveloped as a song. The Serpent Said is typical Tony Banks. It looks back a bit, but hopefully it's also a bit different. It's got elements of Led Zeppelin in it in the some way that Sqounk had. I've never gone off that style."

NEVER LET ME KNOW "Never Let Me Know is just a 'love gone wrong' song, but its extravagant instrumental gives me the chance to use some slightly weirder chords. We kept the drums incredibly simple all the way through, and except for one moment in the instrumental they're hardly doing more than putting a few crashs in. I think it's my second-favourite track on the album - I tend to prefer soft and moody tracks, and that's what this is."

CHARITY BALLS "Everybody has something that hey wouldn't like plastered across the top of the Daily Mirror, but has happened to some people. This track was originally called Skeleton - skeletons in the cupboard - but the idea of Charity Balls added another element because there are people involved in that area who are perhaps more guilty of sleaze than others. Tony Banks the cynic! It's not supposed to be too surious though - it's the closest I get to a joke."

SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR "Old drum machines found it difficult to do anything apart from 4/4. With computers it's no problem at all, so I set up a drum loop in 7/4, got three distinct riffs going, linked them together and wrote Something To Live For. The lyric is about sticking to your guns: at some point you've got to believe in what's important, stick with it and not care what anybody says. If you're famous you'll suffer from this, so this is just a little tale to make you feel better."

A PIECE OF YOU "A Piece Of You studies the idea that when you take a picture of someone you steal a part of them. It's a primitive idea, but when Jack wrote the words I wanted him to write them for half a dozen more of the songs. There's something about a singer singing his own lyrics. The track was originally composed on the piano, and was just cruising along until we introduced the guitar. Then Jack gave it a bluesy character that I really like."

STRICTLY INCOGNITO "Jack showed me an American newspaper clipping about a guy who picked up a 25-year-old waitress who turned out to have multiple personalities. When he was having sex with her she was in the guise of a 14-year-old, so he was sent to jail for having sex with an under-age girl. It's fantasic! If you study the lyric of Strictly Incognito it all makes sense, but you need to listen to it a couple of times to get it."

AN ISLAND IN THE DARKNESS "An Island In The Darkness is about political situations: striving for something, getting there, and fighting to hold on to it. You know... Russia was so optimistic, and now it's going through a much more difficult stage. The same thing will happen in South Africa - the euphoria will disappear and then, having reached the goal that seemed so marvellous, things won't quite hold together. Many people will feel that it's worth carrying on, but they'll really have to fight."
